In grades Pre-K through 2, the emphasis for students is on learning the basic tools necessary to read, write, and compute. In reading and writing, this means mastery of phonics, sight words, increasing vocabulary knowledge and comprehension, and clearly expressing ideas through words, sentences, and paragraphs. In mathematics, this means developing a understanding of numbers, their properties, how they operate, as well as an introduction to measurement, money, and data. In grades 3 through 5, learning builds on these foundational skills as students are encouraged to become an independent learners. Manipulatives and computers help connect abstract concepts to real world experiences and prepare students for secondary course work.
