Exceptional Education and Support Services

The Exceptional Education Department operates under the core belief that all students can learn, achieve, and contribute meaningfully to their community. Recognizing that students possess diverse learning profiles, our mission is to deliver high-quality, specialized instruction and supportive services that eliminate barriers to academic and personal success.

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and state regulations, TCSS ensures that eligible students with disabilities, aged 3 through 21, receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) designed to meet their unique needs in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Our team of specialized educators, therapists, and psychologists works in tandem with general education staff to provide a continuum of services that support student progress within the general curriculum.

Areas of Service & Support

Our department manages a comprehensive range of resources and legally mandated services to support diverse learners:

• Identification & Evaluation: We coordinate the Child Find process and comprehensive psychological evaluations to determine eligibility for special education and related services for students suspected of having a disability.

• Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): For students who qualify, our teams develop tailored IEPs featuring measurable goals, accommodations, modifications, and specialized instruction to ensure measurable academic and functional growth.

• Related Services: To support students in accessing their education, we provide specialized therapeutic services based on individual evaluation data, including speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychological services, health services and ESOL assistance.

• Secondary Transition Planning: Beginning no later than age 14, we collaborate with students and families to build comprehensive transition plans focusing on post-secondary education, vocational training, integrated employment, and independent living skills.

Path to Services 

If you suspect your child has a disability that impacts their learning, please contact your school's principal or classroom teacher to discuss your concerns. The school can initiate the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) or refer the student to the special education team for evaluation consideration.
