As of May 2019, Governor Kemp signed Senate Bill 48 into law. SB48 provides for identification of and support for students in kindergarten through third grade with dyslexia.
In April 2023, Governor Kemp signed House Bill 538, Georgia Early Literacy Act, into law. HB 538 requires the the State Board of Education to approve high-quality instructional materials to be used for teaching students in kindergarten through third grade, requires teachers to have training on "developmentally appropriate evidence-based literacy instruction" beginning in July of 2025, and requires that the GaDOE develop or secure training for teachers in grades K - 3 on the Science of Reading. In addition, to help identify students who may need additional literacy support, HB 538 requires schools to screen students for dyslexia three times per year.
