Paraprofessional Certification Requirements in Georgia
All Georgia Paraprofessionals must hold a valid state license issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC). However, Georgia educators with a valid professional teaching certificate may serve as Paraprofessionals without obtaining a separate Paraprofessional license.
To qualify for a Paraprofessional license, individuals must be employed by a Georgia local unit of administration (LUA). The license is valid for five years and requires the applicant to meet one of the following qualifications:
- Earn an associate’s degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution.
- Complete two years (60 semester hours) of college coursework above the remedial level at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution with a grade of “C” or better.
- Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent and pass the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment.
If you are interested in obtaining a Paraprofessional license, you must first secure employment with a Georgia school, which will require a criminal background check. Your employer will then submit your certification application package, including an official transcript for verification.
