Inclement Weather Procedures for Troup County Schools
The Troup County School System is committed to keeping students and staff safe during severe weather. We work closely with the Troup County Emergency Management Agency and other local authorities to monitor conditions and make informed decisions regarding school operations. Here's how we keep you informed:
How We Communicate Weather-Related Changes:
We will notify families of school delays, closures, or early dismissals through the following channels:
- SchoolStatus: Ensure your contact information is up-to-date to receive direct notifications.
- Media Outlets: Tune in to local television and radio stations, and check their websites for updates.
- District Website: Visit www.troup.org for the latest announcements.
- Facebook: Follow us at facebook.com/troupcountyschoolsystem for updates.
Decision-Making Process:
- We strive to make a decision about school status (closure, delay, or early release) by 3:00 PM the day before anticipated inclement weather.
- Weather conditions can change rapidly. We continuously monitor situations and may need to adjust plans accordingly.
Important Information for Parents:
- County-Wide Decisions: Most school delay or closure decisions apply to all Troup County Schools. Even if conditions seem fine in your immediate area, hazardous roads elsewhere in the county may necessitate a system-wide change. Individual school notifications will occur if specific conditions warrant them.
- Bus Route Delays: Extremely cold temperatures or severe storm watches can cause bus route delays. Our transportation department works diligently to minimize these delays. Please ensure your children are dressed warmly and remain with them at the bus stop during extreme weather.
- Update Contact Information: It is crucial that your child's school has your current home, work, and mobile phone numbers, as well as email addresses, in Infinite Campus. This ensures you receive timely notifications. Contact your school's registrar to update this information if needed.
- Online Learning: In the event of a school delay or closure, online classes may also be delayed or canceled due to potential staff impact or connectivity issues. Your school will communicate the status of online learning.
- Tornado Procedure: If a tornado warning occurs while buses are en route, they will be rerouted to the nearest school or designated shelter (such as a fire station) for safety. Bus service will resume once the warning is lifted and conditions are safe.
- Prolonged Closures: In the event of extended school closures, schools will communicate how students can access assignments and continue learning through Canvas.
Parent Responsibility:
We encourage parents to monitor weather conditions in their own neighborhoods and make informed decisions about their children's safety, even if school remains open. Your family's safety is paramount.
